New DVD on Sto:lo culture
Chilliwack Progress

A picturesque showcase of Stó:lō culture is being launched in the form of a new DVD called Beautiful Lands of the Stó:lō.

The project was undertaken by Stó:lō Tourism Commission, said manager Paula Cranmer-Underhill, and it's set to be screened at a reception April 28 at University of the Fraser Valley.

"We went around and filmed events and popular destinations in the Stó:lō community through the seasons," she said. "Many different voices came together for this."

For the event next Tuesday, the commission partnered with UFV Aboriginal Access Services, and the Visual Arts Department, in a Showcase of Artisans and Art Carvings.

The DVD project filmed by Bear Images Productions spotlights everything from a First Salmon ceremony, to powwows, cultural festivals, canoe races, National Aboriginal Day and more.

With the new Stó:lō DVD to put on their shelves, local aboriginal tourism operators will get a new product to showcase and retail at their sites, she said.

Called Íyomex Témexw Lí te Stó:lō in the traditional language of Halq'eméylem, the DVD will be replacing an older video product the operators were circulating.

The DVD launch is April 28, at the UFV Theatre on the Chilliwack campus, with reception at 5:30 p.m., followed by open ceremonies at 6 p.m., and screenings of the DVD at 7 p.m. and 8 p.m.
